I like it when a speaker maker is concerned with the finish of all parts of one of its models. With or without those little grilles, my review pair looked elegant and modern -- here were two Focal Kantas I loved having in my listening room. Beryllium is a light, strong metal that, while toxic and costly, is not uncommon in speakers -- Focal has used it in their upmarket models for years, as have many other companies. Shaped properly, a beryllium dome tweeter can reproduce frequencies higher than 40kHz before starting to break up.

The breakup frequencies of most aluminum domes are far lower in frequency. Making driver cones of flax, though, are rarer -- as far as I know, only Focal does it. They say flax provides a combination of lightness, rigidity, and damping. The recommended range of amplification is W.

I listened to the Focal Kanta No1s in the context of my current reference system. The speaker cables were from Meitner Audio. Granted, the lowest bass was missing -- I heard nothing below 40Hz, which is only to be expected from a pair of two-way minimonitors. The result was a complete divorce of the speaker cabinets from the sound they produced -- the music seemed to emerge from the very air.

In fact, his voice was the highlight, firmly anchored at center stage, where it focused all of my attention. Musically speaking, the Kanta No1s had vanished. It was entirely detached from the Kanta No1, with no telltale cues of cabinet resonances or driver discontinuities to spoil the stereo illusion and let me know that the sound was coming mostly from the left speaker.

Instead, the cello sounded as if it had replaced the speaker. Once again, the sound seemed utterly independent of the size or position of the right speaker -- combined with the equally free sounds of the cello and bass, this added up to a strikingly convincing illusion of three musicians playing those instruments in my room.You might be tempted to see the Focal Kanta range as Utopia-lite: while the loudspeakers in what is now a three-strong lineup are one-piece designs, lacking the adjustable articulation of the flagship offering, they do echo the company's Utopia style [ HFN Dec '18].

Viewed head-on the effect is almost imperceptible, but it's revealed when you take a three-quarter or side-on view of the cabinet, which also reveals the two-shade finish available on the speakers. Whichever finish you choose, the speakers are immaculately built and finished in the Focal factories, with drive units also engineered and assembled in-house.

Birthday Party That's been a hallmark of the company throughout its year history, which is being marked this year with celebratory special editions of some products, from an ultra-exclusive evaporated metal finish on one high-end model, in a production run of just four pairs, through to an exotically packaged headphone system and a limited edition car speaker offering.

Focal likes to see the speakers in terms of the rooms to which they are best suited: the No1, it says is good for rooms up to 25m2, the No2 for rooms of m2, and the No3 for rooms of up to 80m2.

The Kanta speakers have inherited two in-house driver materials for which Focal is highly regarded: the tweeter uses an inverted dome of beryllium while the rest of the drivers feature the company's Flax cones.

True, Focal isn't the only manufacturer using beryllium for its tweeters, but it was one of the pioneers when most others were avoiding what is a tricky and potentially hazardous material. The Flax drivers use a Tuned Mass Damper surround to manage resonances — first seen in the Sopra No2 [ HFN Sep '15] — and the company's Neutral Inductance Circuit in the motor to linearise the magnetic field regardless of the voice-coil position. Why Flax? Well, Focal legend has it that the company was looking for an alternative to paper for lower-cost driver cones still capable of high performance, and came across this natural material, best-known for its use in making linen fabric.

The hollow nature of flax means it's half the weight of fibreglass, while its low elasticity is ideal for use in cones required to be rigid as well as light, and it also has good damping properties. In the Focal cone, first seen in the Aria range, the flax is sandwiched between two thin layers of glass fibre, giving the driver its 'organic' look. The material is also much more ecological than the plastics or foams used in other drivers, and also has the benefit of not being prey to the fluctuations of global oil prices.

And they have one more advantage for Focal: not only are the drivers made in France, the flax from which they are constructed is also grown nearby… There's more innovation going on in the main shell of the cabinet which is moulded into shape from multiple plys of wood, thus removing unnecessary joins and points of weakness and increasing rigidity, while that sculptural front baffle is made from high density polymer into which the drivers are mounted.

Multiple 'Powerflow' ports are used to front and rear to avoid compression effects, and the grilles, separate ones which fit over the midrange and bass units, leaving the tweeter always exposed behind its mesh cover, are attached magnetically, leaving a clean look when removed.

All of my listening for this review employed digital sources: an Oppo read discs and a Baetis Reference 2 music computer handled NAS-archived files and tunes from Tidal.Sitting smack-bang in the middle of the company's vast loudspeaker range, the Focal Kanta series is described as 'a new vision for a premium speaker', no less.

It's attractive, very well finished and sports some novel technologies. I also like its compactness, which will satisfy modern life's growing need for serious-sounding small boxes — just perfect for your compact riverside apartment, of course. The Kanta No1 is actually one of Focal's most expensive standmounts, aside from the company's truly esoteric high-end designs. The cabinet comes in a choice of high gloss black lacquer and walnut veneer.

The crossover itself features large tracks to minimise circuit resistance with direct paths from input to drivers, and selected film-type capacitors and low distortion air-cored inductors among its components.

It is profiled to offer time alignment between the drivers.

The rear baffle is made of MDF, and has a largish bass reflex port for which a foam bung is provided for use close to rear walls. Downwind of a very capable Cambridge Audio Edge A integrated amplifier [ HFN Nov '18], these little speakers proved both reasonably sensitive and able to play pretty loud.

I appreciated the smooth tone, good low-level detailing and fine tracking of dynamic accents offered by the Kanta No1, even if there was some slight sense of boxiness to the presentation compared to that of a cost-no-object high-end design. And, if I was to be super critical, the bass was not as extended or as powerful as perhaps I had anticipated, cabinet volume notwithstanding. But this speaker does have a certain 'snap' Cut The Mush This speaker's general smoothness and easy-going delivery of detail is a major plus point, and this should not be confused with blandness.

Essentially, you can feed the Kanta No1 a half-decent recording, sit back and enjoy its subtly warm and inviting tone just as its all-pervading suaveness means you never tire of listening.
